Impro Australia has been running The TheatreSports™ Schools Challenge (TSC) – the only schools drama competition of its kind in NSW – since 2005.

 

Since then, it has expanded from its beginnings as a single competition, and now runs across four separate divisions:

Primary (Years 5 & 6)

Junior (Years 7 & 8)

Intermediate (Years 9 & 10)

Senior (Years (11 & 12)

Q: What are the dates for the JUNIOR & PRIMARY 2024 TSC?

A: REGISTRATIONS SENT OUT: AT THE END OF TERM 2

EARLY BIRD DEAL ENDS: MID AUGUST

REGISTRATIONS CLOSE: FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 13th

PRIMARY & JUNIOR HEATS START: MONDAY OCTOBER 21st

JUNIOR SEMI FINALS RUN: MON NOV 4th – FRI NOV 8th

PRIMARY FINALS RUN: MON NOV 11th – FRI NOV 15th

Q: Will  I receive a copy of the TSC Handbook?

A: YES, ALL SCHOOLS PARTICIPATING IN THE 2024 TSC

Q: How many students can play in a TSC team?

A: TEAMS IN THE TSC MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF THREE STUDENTS, AND A MAXIMUM OF FIVE STUDENTS

 

Q: Can a second Junior team be registered in the Intermediate Division, or Intermediates in the Senior Division?

A: SCHOOLS MAY ONLY ENTER ONE TEAM IN EACH DIVISION.

 

Q: Can Junior students  play in the Intermediate Division, or Intermediates in the Senior Division?

A: YES, STUDENTS MAY ‘PLAY UP’ A DIVISION, SO LONG AS THEY (AND THEIR PARENTS) ARE FULLY AWARE THAT THEY WILL BE COMPETING AGAINST OLDER AND POSSIBLY MORE EXPERIENCED STUDENTS. THE MAJORITY OF PLAYERS (i.e., AT LEAST THREE OF THE FIVE STUDENTS) MUST BE FROM THE CORRECT DIVISION. BEAR IN MIND THAT YOU ONLY NEED THREE PLAYERS TO FORM A TEAM. NOTE: A STUDENT MAY PLAY IN ONLY ONE DIVISION.

 

Q: Is the TSC suitable for the whole family?

A: YES. THE TSC IS A FAMILY-ORIENTED SHOW. HOWEVER, AS IT IS IMPROVISED, WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT THERE WON’T BE SOME ADULT LANGUAGE AND CONCEPTS. THINK OF IT AS PG (PARENTAL GUIDANCE RECOMMENDED).

 

Q: Can tickets be booked in advance for the TSC Heats and Semi-Finals?

A: TICKETS ARE ON SALE AT THE HOST SCHOOL ON THE DAY OF THE PERFORMANCE, 15 MINUTES BEFORE THE START OF THE SHOW. TICKETS CAN BE PRE-BOOKED HERE FOR THE GRAND FINALS AT THE ENMORE THEATRE.

 

Q: What time do the workshop and show start?

A: STUDENTS NEED TO BE AT THE WORKSHOPS BY NO LATER THAN 4:15 pm. THE SHOW STARTS AT 7pm AND FINISHES AS CLOSE TO 9pm AS POSSIBLE. THE CALL TIME FOR THE SEMI-FINALS IS 6pm. THERE IS A 10-minute (approx.) DE-BRIEFNG FOR TEAMS AFTER THE SHOW. JUDGES & HOSTS WILL OFFER NOTES TO THE TEAMS, INCLUDING TIPS ON HOW TO IMPROVE THEIR PERFORMANCE. TEACHERS / COACHES ARE WELCOME TO OBSERVE.

 

Q: Do drivers qualify for a free ticket at the door?

A: THE TEACHER, COACH OR AUTHORISED GUARDIAN FOR THE TEAM IS ENTITLED TO ONE FREE TICKET FOR THEMSELVES PLUS A FREE TICKET FOR A GUEST (e.g., DRAMA TEACHER, etc.). EVERYONE ELSE IS REQUIRED TO PURCHASE A TICKET.

 

Q: Can extra students (who won’t be performing in the heat) take part in the pre-show workshop?

A: ONLY THOSE STUDENTS COMPETING IN THE HEAT MAY TAKE PART IN THE WORKSHOP TO KEEP THE NUMBERS AT A MANAGEABLE LEVEL FOR THE STUDENTS & TUTORS. STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO OBSERVE THE WORKSHOP.

 

Q: Is there a workshop before the Semi-Finals and the second-chance heats?

A: THE WORKSHOPS TAKE PLACE BEFORE THE HEATS ONLY, THOUGH WE AIM TO RUN A GROUP WARM UP (TIME ALLOWING) BEFORE EVERY TSC SHOW.

 

Q: Can registration forms be brought on the night of a heat?

A: REGISTRATION FORMS MAY BE BROUGHT ON THE NIGHT – ONLY IF THE REGISTRATION FEE HAS ALREADY BEEN PAID AND YOU HAVE BEEN CLEARED TO DO SO BY IMPRO AUSTRALIA.

Q: Do we receive a refund if we have to withdraw?

A: ENTRY FEES TO THE TSC ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.

Q: How many heats does each team take part in?

A: EACH TEAM TAKES PART IN ONE HEAT, AND THEN EITHER PROGRESSES TO A SEMI-FINAL (THE HIGHEST-SCORING 3-4 TEAMS IN A HEAT) OR POSSIBLY TO A SECOND-CHANCE HEAT (THE REMAINING 3-4 TEAMS FROM THE HEAT).

 

Q: Can we video the performances?

A: PLEASE ONLY VIDEO THE TEAM YOUR CHILD / STUDENTS ARE IN.

 

Q: Can we take photos during the performances?

A: NO PICTURES ARE ALLOWED TO BE TAKEN DURING THE SHOW, EXCEPT BY AN AUTHORISED REPRESENTATIVE OF THE HOST SCHOOL. PICTURES CAN BE TAKEN BEFORE & AFTER THE SHOW.

 

Q: Who will be judging the TSC shows?

A: THE TSC JUDGES, TUTORS AND HOSTS ARE ALL ASSOCIATED WITH IMPRO AUTRALIA, AND HAVE HAD IMPROVISATION & TheatreSports™ TRAINING.
