We are back! Playing upon the fabulous jellybean wall set of Company B's production 'It Just Stopped', there was no stopping the high anticipation, huge crowd and brilliant improvising as Impro Australia returned to the Belvoir St Theatre for Heat 1 of the 2006 Cranston Cup. Comfy new seating and a wonderful big new bar meant the punters were happy even before the games began. Hosts Nigel Sutton and Jane Simmons kept the laughs and action flowing as six teams put on one of the best nights of Theatresports seen in a very long time. The ghost of Lemont Cranston was floating around clapping wildly as players rose to the occasion.

BELVOIR ST HOSTS CRANSTON CUP SEMI-FINALS BEFORE
ENMORE GRAND FINAL!

The fastest and funniest minds in comedy will once again tread the boards, albeit brand new ones, of Belvoir St Theatre as Sydney’s comedy institution, the Theatresports® Cranston Cup hits Semi-Final fever.

Belvoir St Theatre is the traditional and spiritual home of Theatresports. Say’s author and impro diva Lyn Pierse, "The first production opened on the 2nd of June 1985, with an eight team format. Thirty-two players, a compere, a timekeeper and a musician comprised a cast of 35 -an astonishing number in anybody's language. The atmosphere was electric. No one knew what was going to happen. None of us knew what we were going to say or do. We would simply improvise!”

And thus began a cult comedy show that would see us stage over 500 shows at Belvoir St becoming Sydney’s longest running comedy show.  Sydney TheatresportsÒ alumni are a who’s who of the Aussie comedy world: Andrew Denton, Wil Anderson, Gary Eck, Anthony Ackroyd, Gabby Millgate, Geoff Kelso, Gia Carides, Jay Laga'aia, Ewan Campbell, Julia Zemiro, Andrew O’Keefe, Bec DeUnamuno, Robyn Butler, James O'Loghlin and Bianca Dye are just some of the personalities who have cut their comic teeth competing in TheatresportsÒ in the past.

This year’s teams contain no less than nine past Grand Final champions and plenty of new stars. Among them are Jordan Raskopoulos from TV’s Ronny John’s Half Hour, Murray Fahey – 8 times Grand Champion, and Steve Johnston from The Glass House, Michael Gregory – National champion and teams from as far as the Central Coast and Canberra.. Directed by impro comedy all-rounder John Knowles and his trusty co-Director Chantelle Donahue, the return to Belvoir’s stage looks set to provide three very special nights of comedy with guest appearances from past legends and brand new improv challenges. Belvoir St will host the two Semi-Finals and Repéchage, traditionally the three most fiercely contested shows of the competition.

The Cranston Cup is Impro Australia’s Inc’s flagship - an annual cut-throat competition between teams of comic actors. Just like the international TV hit Whose Line is it Anyway? – which took its inspiration from Theatresports – and ‘Thank God You’re Here’ which stars Theatresports players, teams of four are set the task of creating instant theatrical scenes, poems, songs and even operas with absolutely no preparation time. Celebrity judges score each scene and there’s no shortage of audience participation. Every show is unique and wits are honed to a razor-sharp edge. It’s spontaneous, dramatic and hilarious combining the best elements of sport and theatre.

Fourteen teams entered the comp in August but only the best six will survive the Belvoir St Semi-Finals and Repéchage to battle it out in the Grand Final on Saturday 2nd of December at the Enmore Theatre. Who will have the nerve, style and strength to hoist aloft the world’s biggest and ugliest cup in 2006? Be there to find out!
