A comedy institution and Sydney's longest running show turns 24 this year as contestants amass to vie for Impro Comedy's Holy Grail. Performing improvised sketches based on audience suggestions similar in nature to the television shows Whose Line is it Anyway and Thank God You're Here!', this is the nation's cult comic show Theatresports®. Sydney's crème de la crème of comic improvisers will once again put their wit and courage to the test to win the Theatresports®Cranston Cup. For twelve weeks, 14 teams will battle it out, starting with the heats, played from Sept 17th until Oct 29th at the funky new theatre space known as Newtown Theatre. We blooded this stage at the recent Theatresports World Cup and are delighted to be back there for the heats. Those successful in the heats will move on to the two Semi Finals and Repéchage. After a long wait, Theatresports® will return to our beloved stage and spiritual home at Belvoir Street Theatre, Surry Hills. The extensive renovations and upgrade are expected to be completed just in time for us to test the new roof and comfy seats! When the field of comedy combatants has been whittled down to the best six teams, they will face off in the Grand Final at Enmore Theatre and one very special team will get their hands on and name inscribed upon the classiest and biggest trophy in Australia. Sydney comedy institution, the Cranston Cup season is the company's flagship - an annual cut-throat competition between teams of comic actors. Set the task of creating instant theatrical scenes, poems, songs and even operas with absolutely no preparation time, every show is 'on the edge' and the rivalry is fierce. There will be plenty of familiar faces and some excellent new talent chomping at their heels.
This year's 14 teams are stacked with talent and impro stars just like every other year. Past Cranston Cup competitions have seen well known comedians such as Andrew Denton, Dave Callan, Wil Anderson, Gary Eck, Henry Nixon, Gabby Millgate, Murray Fahey, Gia Carides, Jay Laga'aia, Ewan Campbell, Michael Gregory, Julia Zemiro, Rebecca DeUnamuno, Marko Mustac, Robin Butler, James O'Loghlin, Lisa Ricketts and many more compete for comic glory. In 2006 some of these champions are back. They are up against some familiar faces from television, impro veterans and a hand full of hot-shot newcomers.
